In September 2009, Macomb County Government was awarded an energy efficiency grant as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. The grant is administered through the Department of Energy through a program called the Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant (EECBG). With the $746,400 that was awarded to Macomb County Government, several programs have been approved for development within the county government campus of buildings. For instance, the county will utilize some of the funds to replace a very old air conditioning system that is located on the Macomb County Building in Downtown Mt. Clemens. This building will also have most of the light bulbs and ballasts replaced to those that are much more efficient for a significant improvement in energy usage.
Another interesting part of the grant allows County officials the ability to do a comprehensive energy audit of most of the buildings. This will provide a blueprint of what projects should be instituted as part of a long range plan to make the county buildings more energy efficient as opportunity arises to implement them. Even though there is a limit to what the initial funds can cover, there is the opportunity to see the positive effects of the grant for many years to come. These positive effects will provide what is described as "respectable savings" on future utility costs that would not have otherwise been afforded.
