County Building gets Energy Audit to Improve Energy Usage

Leading by example is always the best way to show you mean business, and when it comes to energy efficiency, Macomb put its own County Building to the test. From floors to ceilings and from walls to windows, the building has had a thorough energy audit.

County Commissioner Toni Moceri of Warren said this is a major step in the right direction to make county buildings both energy and cost efficient.

"We intend to show the public what Macomb County government is doing to 'go green' not only to protect our local environment, but to also be frugal with tax money by being efficient," Moceri said.

CADmeleon Technical Services performed the energy audit, which revealed ways the county can save money through energy costs.

As the audit was performed, Mike Reilly, engineering manager for CADmeleon, said the information he and Macomb Community College student Dave Keck gathered and verified would show the way to an environmentally friendly County Building.

"We'll enter the information into a simulation program to find out everything that can be done to make the building more energy efficient. We'll have a virtual model to work with. And then compare it to our data to come up with the best recommendations," he said.

There were things the county could do right off the bat, such as reducing lighting in areas where it isn't needed but the audit should show other ways to cut energy consumption on a grander scale.

Macomb County Board of Commissioners also worked with Rebuild Michigan to do an energy evaluation. Nick Evans of the Energy Office evaluated the County Building, Macomb County Jail and VerKuilen Building last June.
