Program Assists with Brownfield
Clean-up Analysis
Macomb County is teaming up with the community to help wipe out environmentally hazardous brownfields.
The Macomb County Department of Planning & Economic Development (MCPED) has grant money that may be used by businesses, agencies and organizations to help with the analysis to determine the possible cost of cleaning up a brownfield for those speculating on purchasing these properties.
"By rehabilitating brownfield property, we improve the environment by taking hazardous materials out of the ground and reduce the chances of it effecting the public. Plus, we help restore a valuable piece of property into the community and it serves as an incentive to purchase and rehabilitate otherwise marginal sites," Senior Planner Gerry Santoro said.
As local municipalities continue developing policies and programs in response to stricter rules by State and Federal environmental authorities, the County is assisting in implementing guidelines, model ordinances, and demonstration sites to help educate decision makers, as well as the general public, of effective tools to employ.
